Ben completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Media Arts at RMIT University in Melbourne Australia in the early 1990’s Majoring in Film Production. During the course he turned a natural flare for Cinematography into a dedicated specialization, shooting many of the other student’s films as well as directing and shooting his own.
Ben has a passionate dedication to visual story telling and is constantly searching for a narrative thread in everything he shoots. He thrives on the collaborative nature of film and video making and is renowned for his ever-positive outlook. Ben’s easy-going nature and ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure with all personality types, has enabled him to build a long and satisfying career to date.
After film school he continued to develop his skills as a DOP on short films while also working as a Camera Assistant on various projects including TV programs such as “The Jimeoin Show”, “Full Frontal”, and later “Survivor Africa”. He was also a contributing Camera Operator on “Survivor” working mainly with POV cameras on the immunity and reward challenges. Eventually he was able to get professional work as a Camera Operator and DOP and in the years since has managed to build a network that continues to sustain him as a freelancer. Ben prides himself on his versatility as a DOP and enjoys a variety of different types of work that demand various disciplines; He’s now been working professionally as a freelance Cinematographer for the past 22 years and has put together a body of work that encompasses over 30 short films, numerous music video’s, TV and web commercials, corporate and educational films, branded content, documentaries, fashion, as well as live music performance and events. Ben is currently based in Melbourne but loves traveling and has worked on projects in the USA, Europe, Africa, Japan, Indonesia, China and the Middle East.
Notable projects include being the DOP and Associate Producer of the independent feature film “Bigger Than Tina” which premiered at The Melbourne International Film Festival in 1998. Palace Films subsequently released the film theatrically in cinemas across Australia in 1999. In 2001 he was the DOP on another independent Australian feature “The Sticks” and in 2006 was the DOP on the feature documentary “Dirty Three”, which premiered at The Melbourne International Film Festival in 2007. Ben has also shot music documentaries featuring artists such as “Missy Higgins”, “The Living End”, “The Meanies” and “Eskimo Joe”. He was also the DOP on live music DVD’s “The Grates” live at the Forum Theatre, “Band of Horses” live at the Corner Hotel and “The Dirty Three” live in Tokyo.
More recently Ben worked in Qatar on the Arabian Peninsula as a DOP for ‘Resolution Films’ on various projects including TVC’s, international TV segments, corporate films and documentaries. Working for Resolution he also travelled to Tanzania in East Africa where he successfully reached the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, while filming a documentary about a group of university students undertaking the climb as part of a leadership program.
Returning from his stint in Qatar he was the DOP on a series of Branded content segments for Australia Post Called ‘Travelling with Tim’ filmed in Shanghai China featuring ‘Socceroos’ football star Tim Cahil. Presently Ben is working primarily on various branded entertainment projects and web commercials, some of which appear as examples on his homepage.
